Luke 19:28-47

We are reading the entry into Jerusalem stories from different gospels. Notice the differences in Luke's telling. Luke has Jesus weep for the city. He weeps because they are missing what God is doing. He weeps as he foretells the destruction of the temple. He doesn't throw out those who are selling, he laments that they are selling. The difference in Luke is in the response of Jesus. Luke shows his sadness that the people have missed the point of relationship with God.

  1. How often do I miss the point of relationship with God? Does he weep for me? It makes me sad to think about it, that I may be missing out on the potential of a great relationship with God.
Jesus is not angry or upset that people are not living with God. I think His sadness and remorse shows the loving nature of God. It shows that He WANTS us, every single one of us.
What would it mean to live in full relationship with Him? To realize 'the point' of a relationship with God? I think it would be that we actively seek Him and rely on Him, that we have enough trust that He can change our lives, that He will take our burdens and make them His own, that He will carry us when we feel like we can't stand. I think it would mean being with Him in the good times, too. It's so easy to turn to God when we are suffering or hurting, but tend to forget when things are going right-it's easy to give ourselves the credit for that. I think the point of a relationship with God is that we always have a friend to support us and lift us up during the hard times, to celebrate the good times with. We must trust that He will be there for us.

  2. This scripture makes we wonder how often our Lord "weeps" over what is happening - in Grapevine or Meru or Rwanda. Our study of "The Hole.." has hopefully awakened us to some of these needs -and to the fact that we CAN make a difference if we choose. We can change the world!
