1 Corinthians 11

In the gospels we have the teachings of Jesus. In the rest of the New Testament we see how the early Christians sought to live out the teachings of Jesus. In this chapter we see an example of one of their struggles. They had a problem with how they were celebrating the Lord's supper, communion. They were having a fellowship dinner as part of the Lord's supper. Except instead of sharing food, each person was eating what he/she brought to the meal. Some were having lavish meals, others had nothing. It is easy to see the problem. Paul has an easy solution, eat before you come.

When you put groups of people together, as we do in the church, you will have problems. There will be conflicts and differences of opinions. There will be intentional and unintentional actions that hurt people. The issue is not whether or not there will be problems, the issue is how we will express to love to one another when problems arise.

  1. It's sad to think that in a church, intentional things are done and said to hurt people. These things do happen, though, and I'm sure I've been involved in some way on multiple occasions.
Have you ever looked back on something you did or a decision made, and think, why did I do that? I should have done (blank). I don't think that we should live our life in regret, always thinking of what could've, would've, should've, but I do think that we can look back on past mistakes and learn. Looking back on things I have said and done with the intention to hurt others, they were over small, petty things. If I had just not said anything or forgiven and forgotten, a series of consequential events could have been avoided. There is no reason to intentionally hurt someone because of a difference of opinion-everyone is entitled to their own.
