2 Samuel 11
The first line of this chapter is a clue that something is wrong. "at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king's men" Why isn't the David, the king, going out with his men? Think how David's life would have been different if he had been where he was supposed to be. Ever find yourself in a place you shouldn't be? The web is amazing in the opportunities if offers, but therein lies a danger. There are many websites where we shouldn't be. Sites that lead as quickly to the destruction of relationships, as David standing on his roof when he should be with his army.
Another thought that strikes me from this passage is the integrity of Uriah. He won't go in to sleep with his wife while the ark and his men are in tents. Even when he is drunk, he does the right thing. The comparison of his action and David's is striking.

If David had gone to war like he was supposed to, he never would have been roaming on the roof and seen Bathsheba bathing. He would never have succumbed to the temptation and his desires. I have found myself many times in places that I shouldn't be, looking back trying to pinpoint what action or decision led me to my current place. The internet is the perfect example, a simple click...or a series of clicks can quickly lead people to websites that they should not be looking at. Something that may seem harmless can soon lead to a sinful action.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that Uriah does the right thing by sleeping outside, and then David orders for him to be put in the front line of battle. This passage seems like a series of unfortunate events for David. Each subsequent action he takes is propelling him in a downward spiral.
